Knowing your rights as an apartment renter will help you get your security deposit returned when you move out of your apartment.<\/p>\n

  1. Read the lease carefully, it is there to protect both you and the apartment owners. If you have any questions or see terms that you don’t think you can follow, maybe it isn’t the apartment for you.<\/li>\n
  2. Document everything from the moment you move in to the moment you move out. Do not assume that the leasing manager will recall a conversation you had, instead put things in writing. If you have a conversation, follow up with an email or written letter.<\/li>\n
  3. Ask about the age of your apartment, the appliances, and the last time that carpets were cleaned or replaced and walls painted. Having this information will be invaluable when it comes time to review what is seen as normal wear and tear.<\/li>\n
  4. You shouldn’t have to pay for normal wear and tear. This includes worn carpets or flooring, faded curtains or window treatments, small marks on the wall or wobbly toilet seats or doorknobs.<\/li>\n
  5. Know your State’s laws. Some states require carpets to be cleaned and walls to be painted between tenants. If that is the case, then they should not charge you for normal cleaning.<\/li>\n
